Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Managed Print Program
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The Managed Print Program changed the printing process for the university. Instead of print jobs releasing directly to printers, staff and faculty are required to swipe their
AU ID card on the printer to release the print job. This reduces paper usage and unclaimed print jobs. Documents in the print queue are automatically deleted after 4 hours, so any jobs that go unreleased will not print.
Additionally, to date, 799 personal desktop printers have been removed and unplugged across campus in favor of shared printers as a part of this initiative. This initiative reduces not just paper use, but electricity use as well.
The software that comes with this system also provides valuable and accurate data for pages printed and how much paper has been saved (i.e. unprinted jobs). We are able to track the number of pages printed, rather than relying on paper use data based on purchased reams.
The Office of Sustainability worked with the Office of Procurement and Contracts in this initiative.
