American University uses the 4-tier LEED rating system to certify its buildings. Currently the university has three LEED for New Construction certified buildings: 4401 Connecticut Avenue, McKinley, and WCL are Gold and Cassell Hall is Silver.
Four additional buildings on campus are currently in the process of being certified and have been excluded from these calculations. These buildings are East Campus.

Consistent with American University’s strategic goal to “Act on our values through Social Responsibility and Service,” and to facilitate implementation of our existing sustainability policies (as referenced above), the purpose of this policy is to protect and restore our environment by utilizing cleaning products and practices designed to: improve energy, water, and material efficiency; utilize renewable materials; enable the University to attain carbon-neutrality or net positive renewable energy production; send zero waste to landfill; enhance the physical campus environment; and protect and enhance the health of the University community.
