The Center for Diversity & Inclusion (CDI) works to advance American University's commitment to respecting & valuing diversity by serving as a resource and liaison for students, staff, and faculty on issues of equity through education, outreach, and advocacy. To achieve this mission, the center is dedicated to enhancing LGBTQ, multicultural, first generation, and women's experiences on campus. American University prides itself in being an affirming place for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and asexual community and its allies. Throughout AU, there are opportunities to participate in a variety of programs/events/services geared towards the LGBTQA community and those interested in LGBTQA issues.

Inclusive programs and practices include, Non-discrimination statement inclusive of sexual orientation, Non-discrimination statement inclusive of gender identity/expression, Health insurance coverage to employees’ same sex partner, Accessible, simple process for students to change their name on university records and documents, Ally program or Safe Space/Safe Zone, LGBTQ studies program, LGBTQ & Ally student organization, LGBTQ living space, theme floors and/or living-learning community, Gender-inclusive/single occupancy shower facilities in campus housing, and more.
