A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, bills, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
In 2010, the AU Office of Sustainability worked successfully with the DC Dept of the Environment (DDOE) to develop an incentive program for wind power in the District of Columbia. As a result, American University was the first entity to apply for and be awarded a grant to install a small-scale wind turbine in DC.
The Office of Sustainability is also working with DDOE to advocate for discounts on stormwater and impervious area fees based on stormwater management and mitigation efforts.
