A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with the local community:
An undergraduate environmental science class worked with neighboring McLean Gardens to carry out a storm water assessment for the condominium community. Over Labor Day weekend, September 4th through 8th, 2020, fifty American University students, faculty, staff, and local neighbors and community members volunteered to help install two green roofs, AU's fourth and fifth, on the terrace of the Kogod School of Business building. With local non-profit DC Greenworks overseeing the project, volunteers helped will all aspects of the installation including removing the existing roof pavers, laying down various layers of roofing, spreading the green roof growing medium, and planting the new green roof. Billed as an old fashioned barn raising with a newfangled twist, the project served as a collaborative learning experience that will improve the environment at AU for decades to come. The stormwater assessment for McLean Gardens culminated in a presentation of the project's findings and recommendations presented to McLean Gardens community members and local government representatives.
