The SGA Senator for Sustainability goes above and beyond the intent of any existing credit. This position provides an intentional voice and direct, consistent line of communication between the Center for Sustainability and SGA. It also provides a formal leadership role for students to gain mentorship from the Center for Sustainability staff along with support and guidance on project implementation.

Over the past three years, the Agnes Scott SGA Senator for Sustainability has been held by three different undergraduate students. As a result of consistent meetings between the SGA Senator for Sustainability, the Sustainability Fellow and the Executive Director of the Center for Sustainability, there has been an increase in communication and collaboration between SGA and the Center for Sustainability. In FY23, the SGA Senator of Sustainability collaborated with other Senators and students to successfully pass the Resolution for the Commitment to Climate Justice, Action & Sustainability addressing the need to elevate concerns of prioritizing environmental and climate justice in all aspects of the college’s operations.

In FY24, the SGA Senator of Sustainability completed a full-campus listening tour to inform the Procurement: Quality over Quantity Resolution. This included surveying students on use, importance, and longevity of SWAG items and hosting focus groups with departments that purchase the highest amount of SWAG to better understand their marketing intent for the items. This effort later supported the drafting of the college’s Zero Waste Strategic Plan. The campaign led by the SGA Senator of Sustainability has led to tangible changes in the purchasing practices of multiple departments on campus.
