Agnes Scott has taken steps to publicly acknowledge and address its historic involvement in injustices by developing comprehensive programs in conjunction with the college’s Belonging, Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (B.J.E.D.I) initiatives. A few examples include, hosting collaborative professional development workshops for Agnes Scott faculty and City Schools of Decatur teachers on “Decolonizing the Curriculum, One Syllabus at a Time: Pedagogy as Social Justice”. Along with developed and implemented courses, materials are accessible on the college’s learning management system and a library guide, LibGuide was produced for supplemental resources for teaching and learning, which is accessible to the entire campus community.

The Gay Johnson McDougall Center for Global Diversity and Inclusion received a $750,000 research grant from the Mellon Foundation in 2022 to support the work of the project, “Acknowledging our Past: Acting Now for a Transformed Future.” This project is a two-part initiative, designed to elevate the lives of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) artisans and workers who built Agnes Scott’s campus and the City of Decatur. Through this process Agnes Scott has inspected the history of its foundation, legacy, and participation in oppressive practices and how to illuminate the stories of those left behind for the purpose of creating a more equitable future. The second part of the initiative involves launching strategies to ensure that the contributions of the aforementioned individuals are not erased.
