Description of the institution’s participation in sustainability-focused networks for educational institutions:

Agnes Scott participates in more than one sustainability-focused networks for educational institutions. The Southeast Campus Sustainability Network (SCSN) is a professional network of individuals tasked with primary oversight of sustainability operations at any 4-year higher education institution in the Southeastern US with the intention of supporting each other and building relationships.

Agnes Scott is a participant in the U.S. Department of Energy Better Climate Challenge program. The college has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in scopes 1 and 2 by 50% before the year 2030. This pledge also includes a commitment to reduce energy intensity under scope 2 by 20% before the selected year.

Narrative outlining how the institution formally shares its sustainability experiences and lessons learned with other institutions:

Agnes Scott was invited to present at two sessions during the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Better Plants Summit in April 2024. The Executive Director of the Center for Sustainability presented on a panel discussing the implementation of the Climate Resilience Plan. In addition, Agnes Scott’s campus partner, who co-authored the college’s 2022 case study, “Scaling Up Climate Action through Building Stewardship: The Carbon Savings of Existing and Historic Buildings at Agnes Scott College”, presented on a panel discussing scaling the CARE Tool to a campus scale. Agnes Scott was also invited to present as a U.S. Department of Energy’s panel session at Washington Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC) in February 2023 on the 2022 embodied carbon report as part of a panel of subject matter experts discussing successful carbon reduction and mitigation projects.

Description of the institution’s sustainability mentoring activities:

Agnes Scott College and Bennett College piloted the Second Nature Buddy Program starting in 2022. The primary objectives of the program are to 1) champion interpersonal relationship building among peer higher education institutions in the Southeast and 2) to share scalable sustainability best practices that fit the culture and capacity of each institution. As outcomes of the partnership, Bennett College completed their first Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Climate Action Plan in 2023 and the conversations from the Agnes Scott on-campus tour and many meetings helped shape the ASC 2023 Climate Action Plan Update. Conversations and collaborations between institutions remain ongoing and mutually beneficial.

Description of the institution’s leadership roles in inter-campus collaboration:

The Executive Director of the Center for Sustainability actively serves on the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Georgia - Market Leadership Advisory Board (MLAB) and the USGBC Georgia Women in Green Planning Committee. The MLABs are groups of dedicated professionals who volunteer their time, resources and expertise to support USGBC’s mission in their local markets. Representing diverse perspectives and sectors, they advise on strategic local activities and initiatives implemented as part of USGBC’s global work plan. The Women in Green Planning Committee hosts an annual event, switching locations between the two Metro-Atlanta, historic women’s colleges - Agnes Scott College and Spelman College. The event provides a platform to empower women and allies to enhance, strengthen, and lead green industries across all sectors.
