Are there processes or tools in place to assess the success of the applied learning projects?:
Description of the processes or tools used to assess the success of the applied learning projects:
-
STEM Scholars Program (run through the Science Center for Women) - STEM Scholars Program provides full-time summer research experience to Agnes Scott students in mathematics, astrophysics, physics, biology, chemistry, neuroscience, psychology, engineering, geology, computer sciences, biomedical sciences, health sciences, environmental sciences and multidisciplinary variations of these. The Soil Health & Regeneration project started as a STEM Scholars Program project, which followed the STEM Scholars Program outline of mentored research, feedback, assessment, oral presentation opportunities, and recommendations for future work.
-
ASC Permanent Forest Plot Program - The ASC Permanent Forest Plot Program (PFPP) is part of the national network of institutions through the Ecological Research as Education Network (EREN). “The goal of this project is to establish a set of permanent research plots that will allow faculty and students to address questions related to tree biomass, carbon accumulation, invasive species, and disturbance patterns across a range of sites and ecoregions.” Agnes Scott’s Permanent Forest Plot Program includes four on-campus locations, one located in a City of Decatur park and one located in a DeKalb County park. Along with the questions posed by the national PFPP, Agnes Scott is utilizing heat sensor and soil moisture data to better understand community vulnerabilities and impacts from climate change to make recommendations to build climate resilience. This project follows the guidelines by PFPP and along with year-round student researchers, summer students engage with the project also through the framework of the ASC STEM Scholars Program, which provides mentored research, feedback, assessment, oral presentation opportunities, and recommendations for future work.
-
Religion & Ecology 210 Practicum - this applied learning course is taught annually and provides opportunities for students to engage with on-campus and community led projects and programs. Students work in groups to complete projects for their clients along with engaging in research opportunities around the themes of religion and ecology. As part of the course, the faculty conducts assessments which are used internally along with reports as part of the college’s accreditation process.
