1.1 Percentage of academic departments with sustainability course offerings
Number of academic departments with at least one sustainability course offering:
Annotated list or inventory of the institution’s sustainability course offerings by department:
Description of the process used to identify the institution’s sustainability course offerings by department:
The number of courses offered in this report is consistent with the data provided by the Office of Institutional Research for the Common Data Set. To determine the number of academic departments, we counted the number of faculty-assigned departments that were represented within the inventory of total courses.
All Environmental & Sustainability Studies (ESS) minor courses are defined as Sustainability-Focused. The ESS courses are reviewed and approved by the ESS Co-Directors to meet the requirements of the interdisciplinary ESS curriculum. The Registrar maintains an active, accessible, and current academic course catalog. This database can be accessed by both internal and external parties. The criteria used for identifying sustainability courses was to search the database utilizing “AASHE’s Suggested Keywords for Sustainability Course and Research Inventories” outlined in the technical manual.
From this list, course names and descriptions were reviewed and labeled as meeting our ESS minor requirements and/or meeting AASHE’s selected terms matching the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The terms that were used for the search were only pulled from the Core Sustainability Criteria given by the AASHE document. Keywords used were “Equal*, Violen*, Access*, Affordab*, Biodiversity, Citizenship, Climate, Conservation, Contamina*, Discriminant*, Diversity, Ecolog*, Energy, Environment*, Ethic*, Ethnicity, Gender, Green, Hunger, Immigra*, Inclus*, Indigenous, Justice, Minorit*, Pollut*, Poverty, Queer, Racial, Resilien*, Responsib*, Safe*, Sustainab*, Transgender, Transport*, Urbanization, Waste, Wastewater, Water, Wildlife”

1.3 Support for academic staff to integrate sustainability into the curriculum
Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the incentives provided for individual academic staff to integrate sustainability into the curriculum:
The annual Agnes Scott College Women’s Global Leadership Conference is an established and on-going incentive opportunity for faculty to integrate sustainability into their curriculum. Each conference theme (FY22 - Building a Better World: Women and Climate Justice, FY23 - Leading Inclusively: Transformative Change Across the Globe, FY24 - Visibility, Social Mobility, Success), includes foundational values of sustainability and justice.
In partnership with the Agnes Scott Center for Teaching, Learning, & Professional Development, faculty are provided events, workshops and resources, including faculty grants, to incorporate the theme of the annual conference into their Fall course curriculum. For example, in Fall 2021, eight faculty received small stipends through a faculty grant to coordinate environmental research in their courses to be featured as a Student Research Showcase. The 23 individual and group student research projects can be seen via the link below.
