Neonomads Off the Grid Research Shelters

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

AUS College of Architecture and Art and Design (CAAD)students and faculty collaborated with Sharjah’s Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) to design and build prototypical desert survival shelters deployed into the Arabian desert as research stations for environmental scientists. The temporary shelters were installed in the environmentally sensitive and protected wildlife site Elebriddi. The long term goal of this project is to provide shelters for researchers who would like to go into the empty quarter of the Arabian desert. An area which has been historically very hard for researchers to access due to the extreme weather conditions.

The students created a series of prototypes which eventually led to one that was placed in the desert. The team plans to continue this work with the EPAA in the future and continue to develop the Neonomad project.
