AUS Sustainability collaborates with all American University of Sharjah stakeholders in creating strategies and implementing solutions that contribute to sustainable living and working. We promote sustainable practices throughout the University’s core and supporting activities that accrue positive social, economic, and environmental benefits. We monitor and report on the impact of the these activities on our ecosystem and society-at-large. AUS Sustainability Values - The values of the team include shared commitment to one another and to the University. The OS values are: Compassion Openness Cultivation Respect Energy Appreciation Tenacity rEsourcefulness AUS Sustainability is made up of 3 team members: the Head of Sustainability, Sustainability Associate - Operations and Sustainability Associate - Engagement.

Sustainability Division History and Background One of the main priorities in the University’s Institutional Effectiveness Strategic Direction is Sustainability Planning. To ensure steady progress in shaping a sustainable future, the university established a Sustainability division in 2008. Vision and Mission: Our Vision and Strategy strives to deliver excellent education and research in a sustainable manner. The university recognizes its responsibility to the environment and is committed to reduce its environmental impact and improve its environmental performance. By implementing proper practices AUS aims to ascertain sustainable use of natural resources and to prevent any wasteful or polluting exercises. AUS will endeavor to exceed the environmental legal requirements, and aims to manage its operations in ways that are environmentally sustainable, economically feasible and socially responsible. Our campus will strive to be a living model for sustainability, exemplifying values and actions that demonstrate our commitment to stewardship of resources and respect for the environment, now and in the future. Waste Management Projects Recycling The Sustainability division is working towards a comprehensive waste management plan and has initiated various recycling programs. Recycling 1,500+ HP Printer Cartridges per year Mobile phone recycling Reverse Vending Machines for recycling cans and bottles Campus-wide paper and glass recycling Recycling over 18,179 kg of materials in the first half of 2016 Green IT Policy The University has established a Green IT Policy - an asset depreciation policy for all IT equipment and also has established useful lifecycles for IT equipment. This policy provides an end to end solution by providing economies of scale to AUS through recycling electronic waste with an environmentally responsible supplier. Technical Projects Sustainable Construction The Campus Service Center building was built incorporating sustainable design and energy efficient features. AUS signed a MoU with Estidama to comply with the Pearl Rated System. AUS to fulfill 2 Pearl Rated, performance criteria. Sustainable Supply Chain Supply Chain aims at minimizing environmental impacts and maximizing the economic and social benefits. Embedding relevant sustainability criteria within its processes and practices. Engaging current and potential suppliers and contracted parties and best practices in sustainability, while pursuing Value for Money. Sustainability Campaigns Sustainability Division aims to achieve behavioral change among the AUS community, therefore sustainability campaigns are designed for maximum engagement from the audience.
